Spectrum offers training courses for establishing reliability in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R). These are specialist courses for diagnostic instruments, and are suitable only for clinicians who work in diagnosis and who need to develop their diagnostic skills in the field af autism spectrum disorders, particularly in light of the recent Autism Act 2009 and the earlier NIASA strategy for autism identification in children, or for researchers who require the training in order to complete their research in autism.
For general enquiries about ADOS or ADI-R training, or to go on to our waiting list for future courses, please contact Jenny Hannah, Training Administrator.

Spectrum also offers the opportunity to buy in ADOS and ADI-R training on your site, runs Consensus/Refresher Days for those who are ADOS or ADI-R trained and wish to check their administration and coding proficiency and learn about new developments in the instruments, and delivers Study Days on many aspects of ASD. Further details of these options are listed below – scroll down page.

NOTE: Applicants will be sent an email confirming acceptance of a place on a course around six months prior to the course date.

Important: The ADOS and ADI-R courses are intensive courses, and they require work to be completed PRE-COURSE and POST-COURSE. You will need to allow enough time for preparation and completion of pre-course work before attending these courses. Pre-course work requires that you have access to course materials, kits, and manuals, and that you have access to volunteer families, because you will be required to practice administering and coding the instruments and to VIDEO YOURSELF DOING THIS. You will also be required to watch tapes of administrations that we send to you. This is all in order to familiarise you with the instruments prior to attending the course. Pre-course work typically takes around 6 hours to complete, but in addition you will need time to get the materials or kits and to find volunteer families with which to practice the instruments, so it is best not to leave it to the last minute.

Please note that Dr Scott’s training courses are independent of the ARC and the University of Cambridge and ARC staff are unable to assist with any enquiries about course content, bookings or other administrative queries.

Buy In ADOS and ADI-R Training

Spectrum offers the facility for ADOS/ADI-R Trainers to run courses at external sites for those groups who have more than 6 people needing training. The Trainer provides consultancy, advice and master materials for setting up the course, assists in securing educational discounts on materials for the training course, completes post-course assessments, and attends to run the course itself. The external site must provide administration and find suitable volunteer families, buy in additional course materials for the training (potentially at discounted price – see above), pay trainer accommodation and travel costs, and pay trainer fees. Typically, if there are 6 or 7+ people requiring training, it is less costly to take this option than to send those people to attend a pre-arranged course. It is possible for up to 12 people to attend for reliability level training, plus a further 12 people who only seek clinical training. (For further information on the distinction between the two please see our FAQ section).
If you are interested in enquiring about buying-in training on your site please contact
Dr Fiona Scott or Jenny Hannah, Training Administrator.

Meanwhile, for further information on the ADOS or the ADI-R you can access the University of Michigan’s Autism and Communication Disorders Centre excellent website, which has FAQs, information, references and more on both instruments. It can be reached at www.umaccweb.com.
